Hi all,
I'm Ashley Diamond, a senior here, and I've been taking the same field work program every semester since I arrived. If you've seen the title and are thinking "but I'm not musical," you have no problem. Musical skill is unimportant, as this program aims to use the social and life-enhancing qualities of music to assist those in need in the community.
If you're worrying about taking on a volunteer duty, you actually get 1/2 a credit for this (through Field Work). And fuel reimbursement (I can also provide some transport).
In a nutshell what participants initially do is learn an audience-specific repertoire (the songs are very easy to pick up, and it really doesn't matter if you have to fudge it a little). In this case we intially learn a lot of old jazz and pop standards to go into a couple of local adult and nursing homes and sing (and dance if you want) with the residents. The "with" is important, because it is their active participation that is most helpful. You may think "Singing with old people? That's about the opposite of fun.", but in my experience the participants get at least as much, if not more, out of it.
As of now, the planned meeting time would be 2pm - 3pm on Saturdays, but that is entirely negotiable. The session would alternate between singing the songs between ourselves at Vassar, and going on outreach. Initially the outreach would take place at Green Briar in Millbrook, but also at The Fountains in Millbrook.Once the group settled in there would also be an opportunity, for those who are interested, to go to outreaches PARC (mentally impaired adults) run, or one led by a group of impaired and autistic youth.
On the academic side, this goes through Field Work, but the program was initiated by the Center for Personal Development through Music in Verbank. They have info on themselves and on outreach on their site:
http://cpdmusic.com/community-outreach/I have never seen a program before that makes such a difference to both groups of participants. I certainly credit it with keeping me sane during hectic periods at Vassar! If you want to give it a shot you can email me: atdiamond (at) gmail (dot) com
Thanks!
